Aug 28, 2024 | Travel

jefferson memorial washington dcWashington, D.C., has one of the longest histories in the country, and it’s vital to our nation’s history. Landmarks, museums, and many other locations are embedded in the culture and history, which is why it’s one of the best places to visit and experience. The best way to get through Washington, D.C., and embrace these experiences is by bus with Sunshine Tours.

About The Tour

The upcoming Veterans Day “Tour of Honor” will be from November 9th through November 12th of this year. Guests will be picked up at one of four pickup points: Wytheville, Marion, Kingsport/Johnson City, and Roanoke. They will spend three nights in Washington, D.C., and four days experiencing the sights.

DC Tour: Itinerary

The fun starts on the first day, once you’re picked up at one of the pickup points and make your way to DC. Below are the different stops you can expect throughout the week and during the Tour.

Museum of US Army / Tree Lighting

Stop at the Museum of the US Army on your way into Washington, D.C., to get introduced to the culture and experience of the nation’s capital. The museum offers sights, artifacts, and exhibits designed to give you over 240 years of history. During the week leading up to Veterans Day, you can expect to find a special event or showing in the theater.

Later that evening, you’ll experience one of the most significant events in DC each year – the National Tree Lighting—the national tree located just south of the White House. Expect a performance or two from well-known artists and fireworks to follow the event. This is a great way to end your first day in DC as you head over to one of the nearby hotels.

Memorial Tour / Veterans Day Parade

Moving into day 2, the Tour will head downtown into DC for the popular Memorials and Monuments Tour. Several stops that morning will include:

  • Air Force Memorial
  • Korean War Memorial
  • FDR Memorial
  • Lincoln Memorial

Several others are along the way, giving you an entire morning’s worth of memorials and helping you set the mood for the highly anticipated Veterans Day Parade. This parade comes full of vendors and other events happening just before and after the parade ends. The night celebrating the memory of these veterans started with a Tour of the most prominent events in history and ended with a celebration of the sacrifices that were made.

Marine Corps Museum / Mount Vernon

Day 3 begins with an early morning visit to Mount Vernon, the home of the first President, George Washington. This is just a quick ride outside of DC, and you can explore the entire estate while on the property. It has been preserved to maintain its traditional look and give a glimpse into the early years of American history. Expect to spend a couple of hours on the property since many of the rooms are open and accessible.

Heading back into DC, you will stop at the Marine Corps Museum, which details the history of this well-known military branch. There, you will find exhibits and marine stories that give you a glimpse of marine life over the years. The last stop before heading back for dinner is the Quantico National Cemetery. Experience the aligned rows of veterans who served in all military branches.

Arlington Cemetery / Homeward Bound

Day 4 starts with packing up and returning to your pickup point. Before leaving DC, however, you’ll make one of your most important stops, the Arlington National Cemetery, where the tomb of the Unknown Soldier resides. This is some of the most sacred ground in the United States, and you get to experience that first-hand, finalizing your DC experience.
