1 SHENANDOAH VALLEY / BLUE RIDGE MOUNTAINS
We leave today and make our way through the Shenandoah Valley and into the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia where we stay in Wytheville.
2 WESTWARD BOUND / KENTUCKY / INDIANA / ILLINOIS
We start our journey to the Pacific Coast going through the beautiful horse country of Lexington and Louisville, Kentucky and the southern tip of Indiana. We spend the night in Mt. Vernon, Illinois.
3 ST. LOUIS ARCH
Today we visit the famous St. Louis Arch. The Arch was constructed to symbolize the fact that St. Louis was considered “The Gateway to the West” when pioneers were migrating to California and other points west. We ride to the top of the arch for a panoramic view of St. Louis and the Mississippi River. We continue through Kansas City and into Topeka, Kansas to spend the night.
4 DWIGHT EISENHOWER BOYHOOD HOME / COLORADO
Today we proceed through Kansas and into Colorado. In Abilene, Kansas we visit the Eisenhower Family Home, “Place of Meditation”, where Dwight and Mamie are buried, and the Dwight Eisenhower Museum. This museum has many artifacts previously owned by the former President as well as various displays about his illustrious career. We spend the night in Colorado Springs, Colorado.
5 OLYMPIC TRAINING FACILITY / CHEYENNE, WY:
Our first stop this morning is at the Olympic Training Facility to see how these amazing athletes train for the Olympic Games. We will drive through The Garden of the Gods providing a close up look at some unusual rock formations. We will also see the gold dome of the capitol building in Denver as we drive through the rich looking downtown section of this beautiful “Mile High City”! We spend the night in Cheyenne, Wyoming.
6 COWBOY COUNTRY / SALT LAKE CITY
This morning we cross the Continental Divide as we head west across the state of Wyoming to Salt Lake City, Utah to spend the night. This evening ride by the Capitol Building in Salt Lake City.
7 GREAT SALT LAKE / RENO
As we leave this city we drive beside The Great Salt Lake for many miles. We travel by the Bonneville Salt Flats where many land speed records have been made and then through Nevada to “The Biggest Little City in the World” – Reno, Nevada. We spend an exciting evening and night in this casino town that never sleeps.
8 VIRGINIA CITY / LAKE TAHOE / CALIFORNIA
This morning we will head to San Francisco with our pockets full of quarters (hopefully!). Along the way we spend a delightful morning in Virginia City, Nevada where careful restoration has recreated the 1870’s appearance of the West’s Mining Metropolis. After a tour of this town we go by Lake Tahoe, a beautiful mountain lake on the Nevada/California Border. We head across the Sierra Nevada Mountains to California’s State Capital – Sacramento. We make a stop at their beautiful state capitol building before heading on to San Francisco to spend the next two nights in the “City by the Bay”. Our accommodations in San Francisco are right in the Heart of the Fisherman’s Wharf Area!
9 SAN FRANCISCO CITY TOUR / CABLE CAR RIDE / ALCATRAZ ISLAND
Today we have a Local Guide share a Tour of the City of San Francisco. Some of the highlights of this Tour include a Ride on San Francisco’s Famous Cable Cars, The Golden Gate Bridge, Chinatown and a Short Boat ride to Alcatraz Island where we take a Tour of this Infamous Prison to see what it was like when the Prison was in operation. As our Hotel is at Fisherman’s Wharf, you will have the remainder of the afternoon and evening for shopping in some of the unusual shops as well as enjoying one of the Great Restaurants in this Famous area of San Francisco.
10 GOLDEN GATE BRIDGE / “DRIVE THROUGH TREE”
This morning we leave San Francisco by way of The Golden Gate Bridge and head up Highway 101 to Eureka, California. On our way we stop in Santa Rosa, California for a Tour of Bees N Blooms. A home for thousands of honeybees, cut flowers of many varieties, a lavender labyrinth, several acres of lavender for oil production. They practice regenerative farming that helps sustain ecosystems from the soil up. We also stop by Leggett, California to see the much talked about “Drive Through Tree”. This Giant Sequoia is so large that automobiles may easily drive through a hollowed-out portion of the tree. We spend the night in Eureka, California.
11 PACIFIC COAST / REDWOOD NATIONAL PARK / OREGON
We leave Eureka headed up the Pacific Coast of Northern California. This Coastal Area has some of the Most Beautiful Scenery in the United States. As we drive through Redwood National Park we are dwarfed by the giant Redwood Trees towering above us. We continue up the Pacific Coast into Oregon for some of the most breathtaking scenery of the entire Tour. We go by Coos Bay and at Florence, Oregon we leave the Pacific Coast and head east to spend the night in Albany, Oregon.
12 MT. ST. HELENS / MT. RAINIER / SEATTLE
Today we head North through Portland, Oregon and into Washington. We ride through the cascade range of mountains and get a glimpse of Mount Hood, Mount St. Helens and Mount Rainier. After a brief look at the City of Seattle we head east across the State to Moses Lake, Washington for the night.
13 IDAHO / BIG SKY COUNTRY / BOZEMAN, MONTANA
Today we go by Coeur D’Alene and Kellogg, Idaho. We cross the Bitterroot Range of Mountains and enter “Big Sky Country” – Montana! We travel on through Missoula and Butte, Montana. We spend the night in Bozeman, Montana.
14 YELLOWSTONE NATIONAL PARK / OLD FAITHFUL / CODY
Today is a very exciting day for us as we visit the Oldest and Largest of our National Parks – Yellowstone. After taking a look at “Old Faithful” we stop to see “The Grand Canyon of Yellowstone” and Yellowstone Falls. We leave the Park and head through the Wapiti Valley to Cody, Wyoming, for the next night. This Highway was designated the “Most Scenic 52 Miles in America” by President Theodore Roosevelt.
15 BUFFALO BILL HISTORICAL CENTER / CODY, WYOMING
Today while in Cody, a Town Founded by Col. “Buffalo Bill”, we visit the Buffalo Bill Historical Center. We spend some time in downtown Cody and have lunch at the Irma Hotel before heading East through the Big Horn Mountains to Sheridan, Wyoming for the night.
16 DEADWOOD / BLACK HILLS / SOUTH DAKOTA
Today we head east into the Black Hills of South Dakota. This afternoon we have a tour of the historic town of Deadwood. We spend the night in Deadwood, South Dakota.
17 KEYSTONE / MOUNT RUSHMORE
Today we go to Crazy Horse Monument and Museum. This afternoon we head to Keystone for some shopping and night time illumination of Mount Rushmore. We spend the night in Keystone.
18 WALL DRUG / BADLANDS NATIONAL PARK / CORN PALACE
This morning we visit the World Famous Wall Drug Store in Wall, South Dakota. This afternoon we visit Badlands National Park. The Native Americans called it “Land Bad”. Our last stop of the day will be the World’s Only Corn Palace. We then make our way east crossing the Missouri River where we spend the night in Mitchell, South Dakota.
19 BOYS TOWN / ST. JOSEPH, MISSOURI
Today we visit the unique community of Boys Town for a tour and lunch. The village of Boys Town was established in 1917 as the headquarters of the Boys Town organization, also known as “Father Flanagan’s Boys’ Home”, founded by Father Edward J. Flanagan. It is dedicated to the care, treatment, and education of at-risk children. In 1943 Boys Town adopted as its image and logo a sculpture of a boy carrying a younger boy on his back, captioned “He ain’t heavy, Father, he’s my brother”. We then follow the Missouri River through Iowa and Nebraska. We make our turn east to St. Joseph, Missouri for the night.
20 INDEPENDENCE, MISSOURI / HARRY S. TRUMAN HISTORIC SITE
This morning we stop at Independence, Missouri to visit the Harry S. Truman Historic Site. On display are many artifacts relating to this former President. We visit the Family Grave Site in the Courtyard of the Museum. We continue to Mt. Vernon, Illinois for the night.
21 INDIANA / KENTUCKY / VIRGINIA
Today we continue home by way of Evansville, Indiana, Louisville and Lexington, Kentucky and spend the night in Wytheville, Virginia.
22 HOMEWARD BOUND
Our journey today takes us through the Shenandoah Valley and home with our many memories of our Tour to San Francisco and The Pacific Northwest.
